His career has spanned morning radio, drive time radio outside broadcasting, documentaries, production, sales, marketing, news and current affairs.
In television he has anchored television news, outside broadcasts, special events, entertainment shows and current affairs for 22 years.
At age 29, Vic was appointed to manage CBC radio and a few years later took on the challenge of managing both radio and television.
While at the CBC, he conceptualised and implemented what was then the number 1 radio station in Barbados, Liberty 98.1FM
He also had responsibility for the implementation of what is today the only local cable television network system in Barbados.
Vic Fernandes joined what was then Barbados Rediffusion Service Ltd in 1987 first as Deputy General Manager responsible for sales marketing and business development, in 1989 became General Manager and subsequently Managing Director and CEO. He was later invited to join the parent board of the Nation Corporation.
During his tenure at the company three new radio stations were created and introduced DIRECTV to Barbados. He also repositioned the company and re branded it as STARCOM Network Inc. Part of that repositioning included the closure of Star Radio Cable which had been the lynchpin of company since 1935. This included the removal of a network of over 600 miles of cable.
Our 4 radio stations at present occupy the top 4 positions in the Barbados market and with the addition of the major US networks – ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC – in 2007, as well as the cutting edge DIRECTV+ DVR receiver in 2008, DIRECTV confirms our commitment to continue to meet and exceed your expectations in programming content and quality.
During his tenure at STARCOM Network Inc the company moved from a dismal financial position to one of sustained growth and stability.
